Description: The Medicine Buddha Mantra (short mantra), in Sanskrit "Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha Bekanze Radza Samudgate Soha," is often transliterated into Chinese as "爹呀他 嗡 贝堪则 贝堪则 玛哈贝堪则 拉杂 萨目嘎蝶 索哈." This is the fundamental mantra of Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru), from the *Bhaisajyaguru Sutra*. During his past lives, Medicine Buddha made twelve great vows specifically to heal the physical and mental illnesses of sentient beings, eliminate calamities, and prolong life and fulfill wishes. Therefore, reciting this mantra can resonate with the blessings of his vows.

For practitioners, the main benefits of reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra include:

- **Healing of Physical and Mental Illnesses:** It can eliminate physical ailments (such as serious illnesses, plagues, and unexplained diseases) and mental afflictions (internal "sources of illness" such as greed, anger, and ignorance), purify karmic obstacles, and bring health and happiness. Scriptures record that sincere recitation can eliminate all suffering and even bless water, food, and medicine, leading to swift recovery.

- **Averting Calamities and Prolonging Life:** It averts nine kinds of untimely death, calamities, and poverty, increasing blessings and prolonging life. It is especially suitable for sentient beings in the Dharma-ending Age, helping them to escape suffering and live a prosperous and peaceful life.

- **Eliminating Sins and Rebirth in the Pure Land:** It purifies negative karma and prevents rebirth in lower realms. Reciting it at the time of death or for the deceased can lead to being received by the Medicine Buddha and the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, reborn in the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli (or assisted in rebirth in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss), attaining non-retrogression until Buddhahood.

- **Fulfilling Wishes and Increasing Wisdom:** All desires, such as success in career, harmony in family, and progress in spiritual practice, are fulfilled. When reciting this mantra, dedicate the merit to all sentient beings, accumulating immeasurable merit and receiving the protection of all Buddhas.

- **Enhancing the Power of Practice:** The mantra contains the compassionate and luminous energy of the Medicine Buddha. Reciting it can open wisdom, dispel ignorance, overcome inner greed, anger, and delusion, and help practitioners attain liberation.

Reciting it daily without interruption (at least 108 times) yields more significant results. Even when healthy, reciting it can prevent calamities and accumulate merit. Many practitioners have shared real-life experiences, such as relief from illness and averting disasters, proving its incredible power.

The Meaning and Influence of the Medicine Buddha Mantra in Tibetan Buddhism

In Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana), the Medicine Buddha (Tibetan: Sangye Menla, སངས་རྒྱས་སྨན་བླ) is revered as the "King of Healers" or the "Healing Buddha," representing the deity of healing. Its body is blue like lapis lazuli, symbolizing purity, light, and healing energy. It is often practiced with the Bodhisattvas of Sunlight, Moonlight, and the Twelve Yaksha Generals, among other retinue.

**Meaning**:

- The Medicine Buddha represents the healing aspect of all Buddhas, healing not only external physical ailments but also the internal "illness of ignorance" (greed, anger, and delusion). Its twelve great vows emphasize eliminating the suffering of sentient beings, restoring all faculties, and establishing right view, symbolizing great compassion and universal salvation for all beings in the Dharma-ending Age.

- The mantra means "Medicine! Medicine! Great Medicine King! Universally save sentient beings, achieve perfect enlightenment." Reciting it awakens the inherent healing power of sentient beings, transforming body and mind into a pure land of lapis lazuli light.

- In Vajrayana Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha practice is a fusion of exoteric and esoteric teachings, emphasizing visualization (visualizing blue light healing), the combination of mantras and medicine, symbolizing holistic healing of body and mind.

**Influence**:

- Tibetan medicine (the four medical texts) originates from the Medicine Buddha. Tibetan doctors frequently recite this mantra to bless medicines, regarding it as a medical protector.

- It is widely used in healing rituals, pacification ceremonies, and longevity practices. Many Rinpoches (such as Lamas) bestow Medicine Buddha empowerments or practices for personal healing or to pray for the well-being of all beings.

- In Tibet, Medicine Buddha thangkas and statues are often placed in monasteries or homes. Reciting the mantra is considered a powerful homa (ritual offering), capable of overcoming internal and external obstacles and enhancing meditation and supernatural powers.

- Its influence is profound within Tibetan culture; for example, it is recited collectively during epidemics or disasters to pray for national peace and the liberation of all beings from suffering.

In short, the Medicine Buddha mantra is a supreme Dharma practice that transcends both Han and Tibetan traditions. Reciting it benefits not only oneself but also others, embodying the spirit of Mahayana Bodhisattvas. It is recommended to recite it with a pure and reverent mind, dedicating the merit to all sentient beings to obtain the greatest benefit.
