Description: Green Tara (Sanskrit: Tārā, Tibetan: Sgrol-ma, meaning "Savior Mother" or "Liberator Mother") is one of the most revered female bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism, considered an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, symbolizing compassion and swift salvation. There are two main legends surrounding her origin:
1. **The Theory of Manifestation Through Tears:** According to scriptures such as the *Tara Origin Story*, Avalokiteshvara, seeing sentient beings suffering endlessly in the six realms, shed tears of compassion. The tear from her right eye (or, according to some, her left eye) transformed into Green Tara, representing wisdom and swift action; the tear from her left eye transformed into White Tara, representing compassion and longevity. Green Tara is therefore known as the "Mother of All Buddhas" or the "Swift and Valiant Savior," specifically dedicated to swiftly rescuing sentient beings from the eight difficulties (lion, elephant, fire, water, snake, thief, imprisonment, and non-human beings) and various obstacles.
2. **The Princess's Vow:** Another legend originates from ancient India. Countless eons ago, there was a princess named "Wisdom Moon" or "Prajna Moon" who diligently practiced Buddhism. Monks advised her to vow to be reborn as a man to attain Buddhahood, but she made a great vow: "To liberate all sentient beings in a female form until the cycle of rebirth ends." After countless eons of practice, she attained enlightenment and manifested as Green Tara. This emphasizes the equality and power of women in Buddhism.
Green Tara was introduced to Tibet in the 7th century when Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal married into the Tubo Kingdom (Tibet). In the 11th century, Atisha greatly promoted her teachings, making her a deity venerated by the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Green Tara has 21 emanations (the Twenty-One Taras), with Green Tara as the principal deity. She is entirely green (like jade), with one face and two arms. Her right leg is outstretched (symbolizing her readiness to rise and save sentient beings). Her left hand holds a blue lotus (an utpala flower with three blooming petals: fully open, half-open, and unopened, representing salvation in the past, present, and future). Her right hand is in the wish-granting mudra (gesture of granting wishes).
**Regarding the "Vase":** In Green Tara's depiction, she is often shown holding a lotus in her left hand, occasionally with a vase (or longevity vase) on it, symbolizing the fulfillment of wishes, abundance, and longevity. Some emanations of Tara (such as White Tara or specific wealth Taras) explicitly hold a vase, representing the bestowal of wealth, health, and spiritual abundance upon sentient beings. In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a special "Tara Treasure Vase," a type of treasure vase containing sacred objects, herbs, and gemstones. It is consecrated and blessed by lamas and primarily corresponds to the eleventh of the Twenty-One Taras (Tara who bestows wealth and eliminates poverty), used to dispel poverty (including material and spiritual poverty) and attract abundance.
How to Properly Offer to Green Tara and the Treasure Vase
Offering to Green Tara is a supreme practice for accumulating merit and requesting blessings, emphasizing devotion and a pure mind. Common offering methods include:
1. **Daily Offerings**:
- **Eight Offerings**: Place seven bowls (or eight offerings) before the altar, from right to left: drinking water (Argham), foot-washing water (Padhyam), flowers (Pushpe), incense (Dhupe), lamp (Aloke), perfumed oil (Gandhe), torma (Naivedya), and musical sounds (Shabda). Offerings can be made daily in the morning (representing the above offerings), and then collected and poured into plants or a clean place in the evening.
- **Other Offerings:** Fresh flowers, incense, lamps, fruits, food, etc. Offerings of blue lotus flowers or green items are especially recommended, symbolizing Green Tara.
- **Mantra and Praise:** Recite the Green Tara mantra "OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA," or recite the *Twenty-One Taras Praise Sutra*. Sincere recitation can eliminate obstacles, fulfill wishes, increase blessings, and prolong life.
2. **Vase Offering:**
- If you have a Green Tara vase (or a general wealth vase), place it in a clean, high place in your home (such as an altar), and treat it with the same respect as a Buddha image. Offer incense, flowers, water, and lamps daily, and make prayers.
- Do not open or move it casually; consider it a sacred object for storing blessings. When making offerings, you can recite the Tara mantra or the wealth deity mantra, praying for the removal of poverty and the attraction of wealth and health.
- In Dharma assemblies, the "Tara Four-Hall Offering" or "Tara Five-Deity Offering" is commonly seen, using offerings such as torma (ritual cakes) and vases to transform into an immeasurable cloud of offerings.
Offering Principles: Sincere devotion, without seeking anything in return; dedicate the merit to all sentient beings after the offering. It is best to perform this under the guidance of a guru to avoid formality.
Meaning and Influence in Tibetan Buddhism
- **Meaning**:
- **Compassion and Swift Salvation**: Green Tara represents the active activities of Avalokiteshvara. Green symbolizes the wind element and vitality. Her outstretched right leg signifies "responsiveness to all needs," swiftly dispelling fear, obstacles, and calamities.
- **Female Awakening**: Attaining Buddhahood in a female form symbolizes that Buddhahood transcends gender, encouraging female practitioners.
- **Fulfillment and Abundance**: The vase symbolizes spiritual and material abundance, representing Tara's bestowal of all necessities upon sentient beings (the four activities of pacification, increase, attraction, and subjugation).
- **Twenty-One Taras**: Encompassing various liberating functions, such as healing, increasing wisdom, and bestowing wealth.
- **Impact**:
- Green Tara is the most widely known deity in Tibetan Buddhism; almost everyone knows her and every temple worships her. Almost all masters (such as the Karmapa and the Dalai Lama) practice Tara, considering it a common practice.
- In Tibet, Tara worship is deeply ingrained in the lives of ordinary people: every household worships her, and prayers are offered in times of crisis. Numerous stories of miraculous responses (such as protection from disasters, granting children, and bringing wealth) are told.
- It has influenced Buddhism in Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, and even Han Chinese Buddhism has Tara practices.
- In this modern degenerate age, Tara practice is considered a method of rapid response, used for healing the environment, pacifying wars, and increasing wisdom.
Green Tara's blessings are incredibly swift; anyone who sincerely prays will receive protection. For in-depth practice, it is recommended to seek teachings from a qualified master. May all sentient beings receive the blessings of Green Tara and be free from suffering and attain happiness!
