[The incredible merits and benefits of turning a prayer wheel]

The Great Compassionate Lord prophesied to Patriarch Nagarjuna: In the Dragon King’s Palace in the Naga area, the Bodhisattva possesses a mighty prayer wheel. Anyone who sees, hears, touches, or thinks of this prayer wheel will quickly recover from the pain of the lower realms. Save. You will use it to do great things for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Infinite Light Amitabha Buddha said: In order to benefit all sentient beings in the Dharma Ending Period, I have proclaimed the benefits of the Mani Wheel. The merit of turning the Mani Wheel while practicing is equal to the merit of making offerings to thousands of Buddhas.

The incomparable His Holiness Shakyamuni told Bodhisattva Dripa Namsil: The benefits of turning the prayer wheel once are better than the benefits of a meditating meditator for one year; it is better than the benefits of seven years of meditating for a meditator; it is better than the benefits of nine meditations for a low meditator. years of benefits.

Manjushri Bodhisattva said: The four protectors and the ten protectors will protect you from all obstacles. The bad karma of the lower realms, the five uninterrupted sins, and the ten unwholesome karma are all purified. You can travel throughout the Pure Lands of Buddhas and be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. In the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, you will be reborn on a lotus and lion throne. You will travel to the ten directions to practice the deeds of all Buddhas. If you offer a prayer wheel and turn it in your home, then the sentient beings in the house will also be saved, and the home will become like the Pure Land of Guanyin. When you die, if you place the Six-Character Great Ming Mantra Prayer Wheel next to your head and pray silently sincerely and devoutly, then you will be reborn in the Pure Land of Avalokitesvara without having to practice Po Wa Dharma (transferring consciousness). Prayer wheels are mostly large-scale installations in the Han Dynasty, so they are called wheel collections or wheel collections. Prayer wheels are particularly popular and successful in Tibetan Buddhism. Large-scale prayer wheels are built in Zangguang, Tibet, and small prayer wheels are held by almost everyone among believers and rotate continuously. Depending on the Tibetan scriptures and mantras, turning the prayer wheel will obtain corresponding merits. Among them, the prayer wheel containing the six-syllable Great Ming Mantra, also known as the Mani Prayer Wheel, has been widely spread by eminent monks and great virtues.

As the "Great Water Wind Wheel Tantra" says: "The merits of a yogi who practices seven years are not as good as the merits of turning a prayer wheel once; the merits of diligently practicing the six paramitas in a great calamity are not as good as the merits of turning a prayer wheel once; The merit of hearing the Tripitaka and Four Tantras in one great kalpa is not as good as the merit of turning a prayer wheel once.

Zopa Rinpoche explained: In areas where prayer wheels are built, all sentient beings (not just humans, but also insects, etc.) will not fall into the three lower realms. They will obtain a heavenly body or be reborn in a pure land. Master Bodhi Lion said: Turning the prayer wheel once is equivalent to reciting the Tripitaka once; turning it two times is equivalent to reciting all Buddhist sutras; turning it three times is equivalent to reciting all Buddhist sutras; turning it three times can eliminate one's own body and speech. , mind all the sinful obstacles; if you turn it ten times, you can eliminate the sins and obstacles like King Sumeru; if you turn it a hundred times, your merits will be the same as that of King Yama; if you turn it a thousand times, you and others will be able to attain the Dharmakaya; if you turn it ten thousand times, you will be able to attain the Dharmakaya. , can liberate all sentient beings from oneself and others; those who turn it one hundred thousand times, can quickly reach the place where the sea of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva meets the saints; those who turn it one million times, can make all living beings in the six paths of samsara enjoy peace and happiness; those who turn it thousands of times, can So that all sentient beings in the six realms of reincarnation can be pulled out of the sea of suffering; the merits of those who turn hundreds of millions of times are equal to those of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.

The teacher Sakyamuni Buddha said: "With the power of this prayer wheel, all good gods protect, save, and relieve all untimely death and pain. No one can compare with children, wealth, enjoyment, food, clothing, slaves, etc. If it is said No good deeds of body or speech can exceed the power of this prayer wheel.

Master Ugyen Padmasambhava said: “In all the Buddhist dharma translated from India into Tibetan, there is no good deed done by body or speech that has greater merit than turning the six-syllable mantra prayer wheel.

Chamei Rinpoche said: I have never seen a Dharma with greater merit, greater power, and more profound meaning than this Dharma. The Dharma King's wish-fulfilling treasure once said: Just by using this Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to spin the prayer wheel, you can obtain liberation or be reborn in the land of bliss. Kydrup Rinpoche of Dazang Monastery once gave a teaching at the Buddhist Tantric Training Institute in Sydney, Australia: Many people now always think that turning prayer wheels is a superstition of Tibetans. This is because they do not understand the inheritance and significance of prayer wheels. . Now let’s talk about the inheritance of the prayer wheel teaching: A long time ago, Master Guanyin asked Patriarch Nagarjuna to go to the Dragon Palace and bring the Dragon King prayer wheel to Nanzhan Buzhou, and said: “The Dragon King in the Dragon Palace is the incarnation of Bodhisattva. Dragon Palace There is a prayer wheel. This prayer wheel is very special. Anyone who sees it, hears it, or thinks about it will have increased merit and practice. You should take it back to Nanzhan Buzhou to benefit all sentient beings. " Patriarch Nagarjuna used his supernatural power to go to the Dragon Palace and said to the Dragon King: "Master Avalokitesvara ordered me to ask for your special prayer wheel to use in Nanzhan Continent." The Dragon King replied: "Yes, I do have this. A prayer wheel. A long time ago, there was a serious famine here, which made it difficult for the people to make a living. The Buddha at that time gave us this prayer wheel, which brought blessings to those who see, hear and remember, and solved our disaster. !" So, the Dragon King gave this sutra to the Patriarch Nagarjuna, and the Patriarch Nagarjuna brought it to Nanzhanbuzhou, and many sentient beings benefited from it. The text contained in this prayer wheel is the content of the great vow that Guanyin made to all the Buddhas in the ten directions when he first aroused his great ambition. After that, various teachings on prayer wheels were passed down from the Patriarch Nagarjuna to the lion-faced Dakini, and then to Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Gampopa, etc., and later to the Karmapa Karmapa. In the hands of Xi, it has been passed down through generations of ancestors, and the inheritance has not been interrupted to this day. In the teachings on prayer wheels, the methods and rules for building prayer wheels are described. The scriptures in the prayer wheel were printed or hand-copied in ancient times. According to tradition, the size of sutra characters or mantra characters should be such that they can be clearly seen. In modern times, some people use high technology to reduce the mantras to extremely small characters that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Their intention is to allow more mantras to be placed in the prayer wheels. I am not sure whether this is beneficial or not. When rolling up the paper with scriptures or mantras printed on it and putting it into the prayer wheel, it should be like tying a belt. It is not appropriate to be too tight or too loose. It must be appropriately tight. The central axis in the prayer wheel is usually made of sandalwood or cypress. The prayer wheel made of sandalwood as the central axis corresponds to the elimination of disasters in the four causes, so it is particularly beneficial to the elimination of disasters, diseases and obstacles. A prayer wheel with cypress wood as its central axis has various benefits related to the cause of the Ministry of Love. The prayer wheel itself is made of pure gold, followed by pure silver, copper, and iron. When turning prayer wheels, some people deliberately turn them too quickly and too hard to make them spin faster and longer. This is not good and excessive force should be avoided. In addition to manual prayer wheels, the teachings on prayer wheels also disclose the construction methods and benefits of prayer wheels driven by wind, water and heat. If the wind blows through them and then blows onto any living beings that are propelled by the power of wind, all living beings will benefit. If the water moves the water, the aquatic species in the place where the water flows or the living beings who drink the water will benefit. Others, such as prayer wheels driven by heat, also have similar effects. In short, all living beings who move, see, hear or think about the prayer wheel will form a connection with the Dharma.

Some people believe that simply turning the prayer wheel with hands or blowing the prayer wheel with wind is just a Tibetan superstitious tradition that cannot bring benefits and cannot be regarded as spiritual practice. This is a very wrong concept. The prayer wheel teaching method comes from ancient Indian Buddhism and has a pure inheritance from the Buddha. It was not invented in Tibet. When we recite mantras or chant the Buddha's name, it comes from our inner desires and is reflected in our spoken words. When pushing a prayer wheel or building a wind or water-driven prayer wheel, it is also a good intention coming from the heart. The only difference is that this good intention is reflected in the actions of the body. In essence, this is also a practice, so it can also bring benefits.

[The benefits of turning the prayer wheel - the origin of the Mani Wheel] (Written by Lama Sopa) The Great Compassionate Lord gave a prophecy to the Patriarch Nagarjuna: In the palace of the Dragon King in the Naga area, the Bodhisattva possesses a powerful prayer wheel. , touch, or think of this prayer wheel, you will be quickly saved from the pain of the lower realms. You will use it to do great things that benefit all sentient beings.

Manjushri Bodhisattva said: This great prayer wheel protects us from damage by evil gods, gods, dragons, yakshas and other eight groups of gods and dragons. The Peerless Wish-Granting Jewel Tantra reads: Those who turn the six-syllable Great Ming Mantra prayer wheel will receive blessings from teachers and be granted enlightenment by the deity, be remembered by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and be protected by Dharma protectors to avoid all obstacles.

Quoted from The Peerless Wish-Granting Jewel Tantra: Every turn of the six-character Great Ming Mantra's prayer wheel is equivalent to the number of retreats to recite the mantra. The benefits of establishing a prayer wheel in the earth, water, fire, or wind: When you lift the Six-Character Great Ming Mantra prayer wheel in the wind, all living beings blown by the wind, or sentient beings in the direction of the wind, will escape from the lower realms. be saved from the suffering; when you place the prayer wheel in the fire, the sentient beings affected by the smoke and those who see the light of the fire will be saved from the suffering of the lower realms; when you place the prayer wheel in the ground , all sentient beings who touch its dust and the sentient beings in that soil will be saved from the pain of the lower realms; when you place the prayer wheel in the water, the sentient beings in the water and the sentient beings who drink the water will be saved from the sufferings of the lower realms. He was saved from the pain. Therefore, by turning this great prayer wheel: those with superior roots will gain bodhicitta and benefit all living beings; those with medium roots will gain leisure and encounter the Buddha's Dharma; those with inferior roots will be able to be reborn in a good path and stay away from unwholesome deeds. Therefore, we should not hesitate for a moment about the supreme prayer wheel. We should cherish the prayer wheel, build the prayer wheel unswervingly, and turn the prayer wheel with great vows. Maitreya Shengci said: If you offer brocade robes to the deep prayer wheel, you will receive the reward of good robes in the next five hundred lives. Making offerings to the deep prayer wheels will lead directly to the path to liberation. Offering the flower curtain will become the father of all sentient beings. The merit you accumulate is greater than the merit of chanting the mantra 100,000 times or 10,000,000 times. Gods and demons will pay their respects to you. You will dominate humanity, wealth and food. Everything about you will be meaningful, and even the sentient beings passing by your shadow will be saved from the lower realms. If you make various food offerings to the Six-syllable Great Ming Mantra Prayer Wheel, you will become the Thousand-spoke Wheel-turning Holy King and enjoy all your wishes. Finally, you will meet the Supreme Compassionate Master Guanyin. Practitioners with good fortune can show others the prayer wheel of the Six-syllable Great Ming Mantra, or explain or pass on the teachings of this wheel, just like the teachings of the Buddha.

Quoted from The Tantra Possessing the Lotus Garland: In short, all accumulations of evil deeds, frustrations, depravities, etc., can be purified without effort. Seeing and hearing can be liberating. Quoted from The Tantra of the Circle of Six Thousand: When someone turns this wheel, any sentient being who sees, hears, thinks of or touches it will accumulate two kinds of merit, be able to purify obstacles, and develop bodhicitta.

The Sutra of the Great Chu Lung: The merit generated by offering the golden tip to the prayer wheel can lead to eternal peace and happiness. Due to the merit of the offering, this person will have a kind heart and a pure mind. Those who spin the prayer wheel will become the son of a thousand Buddhas, a sentient teacher. The Buddha gave a corresponding explanation. When death comes, place the prayer wheel on top of your head and you will not have to practice Po Wa Dharma. When you carry the prayer wheel and meet other sentient beings, even those who killed their fathers and mothers will be saved. Even sentient beings who see the prayer wheels on the bridge are saved.

Around the Tibetan New Year in 1998, I owned a silver prayer wheel customized by Pasang Lama. Richard Gere was in Dharamsala at that time. He didn’t know much about Mani prayer wheels, so I mentioned how I found a book about it. The teachings on the prayer wheel, and how important it is and its benefits. In the past at Solu Khumbu, I did not believe that turning a prayer wheel was a teaching. After all, the teachings were related to the heart. But the elderly people in Solu Khumbu, including my mother, used to spin their prayer wheels all day long, even when walking on mountain roads. Later, I found a Dharma text belonging to Lama Lawudo. This lama’s Dharma name is Yeshe Lama. It is said that Lama Lawudo was my previous life. Most of the Dharma texts left in the lama's cave were handwritten. Because the cave was very humid, I had to put them on the roof to dry for a while. While doing this work, I discovered an ancient book called "Professor One Hundred Thousand Manis". There are two or three lines in the book that mention the inheritance of the prayer wheel. The Nagas originally received their transmission from Avalokitesvara, and Nagarjuna received it from the Nagas, and then passed it on to Lion-faced Dakini, who passed it on to Padmasambhava, who then passed it on to Tibet. My confidence grew after understanding the origins of the above. The Dharma text explains the visualization: The Six-Character Great Bright Mantra radiates five-color light to illuminate all living beings in the six realms, purify their five kinds of troubles, and cause five kinds of wisdom to arise in their hearts. These also strengthened my confidence in prayer wheel practice. When I told Richard this, he immediately said that he was convinced and had confidence in this practice, so I gave him my silver prayer wheel. Later, he had to go to Mumbai to raise funds for AIDS patients, so he took this prayer wheel with him. Many entertainers met him there. Since he brought a prayer wheel, these people touched the prayer wheel and felt its power. One actress felt so powerful that she began to tremble. Anyway, I translated the benefits of the prayer wheel for Richard, quoting the French text from the Dharma text compiled by the seventh Panchen Lama Tenpai Nyima. I got this Dharma text from Qizhuren Baozhe when I was in Sydney. Qizhuren Baozhe was the living Buddha of Sera Monastery. This text explains the vast benefits of prayer wheels and introduces how to make them. The final quotation comes from the Kagyu Lama's teaching, which may be based on the interpretation of the second Karmapa Karmapa. …My personal experience is that the prayer wheel makes the local environment peaceful and blesses all living beings nearby, including insects on the ground, protecting them from falling into the lower realms. There are four types of prayer wheels: earth, water, fire and wind. One of the benefits of the prayer wheel is that it encompasses the activities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions. In order to benefit all sentient beings, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas transform into prayer wheels to purify our bad karma and troubles and enable us to achieve the stage of enlightenment.
